São Paulo Municipal Market: what to do and how to get there

The history of the Municipal Market of São Paulo dates back to the 1930s, after the inauguration of the imposing building inspired by German architecture, designed by Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo. With famous stained glass windows by Russian artist Conrado Sorgenicht Filho, the Market's location in the city center guarantees quick access for residents and tourists.

Today, Mercadão de SP, as it is affectionately known, houses more than 290 stalls with stores focused on selling all types of food, such as fruits, dairy products, fish and sausages.

SP Market: what to do

The vibrant architecture of Mercadão de SP matches its bustling internal activity, with workers, tourists and locals visiting the market in search of products or entertainment .

With stained glass windows decorating the space, illuminated by the building's skylights, on the ground floor of the Market you can find a variety of fruits, vegetables, cheeses, cereals, fish, sausages and different meats to try or buy.

As soon as you enter, you will be greeted by a fruit vendor who will offer you some exotic or unfamiliar fruits to try. Be sure to try the dates with strawberries: they taste like chocolate in your mouth.

On the first floor of the building, known as the Gourmet Market, there are several gastronomic options to try, combined with fairs, musical performances and other events to attract the public.

When you go to Mercadão, don't miss the opportunity to do the following things:

Have fun at the Municipal Market and before purchasing anything, check the price, because a kilo of fruit tends to be a little expensive!
