See: How does the adoption process work?

Raising a child is a lot of responsibility, and the dream of many people, which unfortunately, not everyone can achieve naturally, which is not a problem, after all, there are millions of children available for adoption , but how does this process work?

There is still a lot of prejudice and lack of information on the subject, which should not happen, because choosing to be present and raise a person is a demonstration of love in its purest form.

Many people and couples need to resort to unconventional methods in order to have children , and the reasons for this are diverse, we have homosexual couples, infertile or sterile women or men, but we cannot forget the group of people who choose to adopt even though they could have children in the traditional way.

Okay, I want to adopt, what now?

When deciding to adopt, you must go to the nearest Children and Youth Court and meet the prerequisites to be eligible for the process, which is free.

The most important thing is to be over 18 years old and have an age difference of 16 years between you and the adopted child. If this is compatible, you can pre-register in the counties that have the new National Adoption and Foster Care System, using only your family details and the desired child or adolescent profile.

The ECA requires certified copies of birth or marriage certificates, or declarations of stable unions; copies of ID and CPF; proof of income and residence; certificates of physical and mental health; certificates of no civil distribution; and certificates of no criminal record.

These documents will be registered by the registry office and forwarded to the Public Prosecutor's Office, which will analyze them and continue with the process, which allows the Prosecutor to request other documents.

If approved, you will undergo an interpersonal team assessment, where some aspects related to your ability to receive a child, looking at several areas, will be analyzed. If approved, you will do the adoption preparation program, which is mandatory, and, as the name suggests, will prepare you for the final act.

A psychosocial study is issued from this program, which will be forwarded to the Judge who will make the decision to grant or deny your request for adoption authorization, and, if the answer is negative, you can start the process again.

Your license is valid for 3 years and can be renewed for another 3 years if necessary. To prevent it from becoming inactive, with 120 days remaining until its expiration, it is advisable to request renewal at the Children and Youth Court.

If the answer is positive, your data will be registered in the national system, and the search phase begins, always respecting the chronological order, the Judiciary will be informed of the compatibility between the parties, and the child's life history will be provided, if you remain interested in the child, your monitored approach begins.

Once you have successfully completed this phase, cohabitation can begin, where the child begins to live with you for 90 days, but still assisted by the technical team of the Judiciary. After this period, you will have 15 days to request the adoption action, where the Judge grants the adoption and a new birth certificate with the new surname is issued, and all rights are guaranteed.

This entire process takes 120 days, which can be extended for another 120 days if necessary.
