How important is urban planning?

Architecture and Urban Planning are often confused, despite having similar elements, their functions in society are very different and essential.

Without urban planning, cities would not be as they are today, playing a fundamental role in their organization, planning and evolution. Despite often dealing with social and political issues, urban planning allows citizens to live comfortably and have access to spaces in a simple way.

What is Urbanism?

In concept, urban planning represents a set of issues that involve the process of building a city, being an architectural technique focused on city planning .

Historically, it played a fundamental role, especially after the industrial revolution, when numerous housing and social problems arose with the drastic movement of people from rural areas to cities. Obviously, there are many planning flaws throughout Brazil, but the area seeks to remedy them.

What is the difference between architecture and urban planning?

Confusion between the concepts is very common, after all, urban planning can be considered a technique derived from architecture, but there are several points that differentiate them, mainly their focus of action and functionality for society.

Architecture's main objective and function is the creation and design of buildings and environments, however, individually, encompassing interior spaces and structures, but also constructions that meet the functional, aesthetic and technical needs of users and communities.

Because of this, much smaller scales are used, when it comes to buildings, houses, interior spaces, and even monuments, achieving their objective of creating habitable, aesthetically pleasing and functional spaces for people.

Paying attention to form, aesthetics, functionality, building materials and specific client needs when designing buildings.

Meanwhile, urbanism focuses on the planning and design of urban areas and regions on a broader scale, dealing with the layout of cities, land use, transportation planning, movement of people, infrastructure, and sustainable development.

Therefore, he works on larger scales, which involve neighborhoods, cities, metropolitan regions and even regional planning, always aiming to create efficient, sustainable and pleasant communities, considering factors such as mobility, accessibility, land use and quality of life.

Thus, urban planning takes into account aspects such as zoning, transportation planning, economic development, environmental preservation and population growth needs when planning urban areas.

Quality of life in cities

As explained in the previous topic, urban planning is largely responsible for providing quality of life in cities, studying the relationship between society and the environment in which it is located.

Responsible for maintaining the functioning of the city and its spaces, ensuring increasingly more comfortable housing for people, focusing on transport, leisure, infrastructure and, consequently, quality of life, all in a sustainable way.

The area still faces several challenges related to population growth, economy, politics, inequality, sanitation, mobility and socioeconomic development, which await more egalitarian solutions that guarantee the fundamental rights of all inhabitants.

It is not at all simple and it certainly still needs many changes, but urban planning has already made possible and will continue to provide an increasingly better quality of life, regardless of any factor.
