Did you know that beer is now considered the third most consumed beverage in the world and that Brazil is the third largest consumer market for this beverage in the world? That's right. Second only to water and coffee, beer is very popular all over the world.
Consumption in Brazil increased during the pandemic
And consumption in Brazil during the pandemic in 2020 was the highest in the last six years, behind only 2014, when the country hosted the Football World Cup.
An unprecedented survey carried out by Euromonitor indicated that, in 2020, beer sales volume in Brazil reached 13.3 billion liters.
And the projection is for an increase in 2021, reaching 13.67 billion liters sold.
The survey indicated that, in addition to people drinking more – compared to the previous year – more people started consuming the beverage.
This is because in terms of consumption per adult, the annual average in Brazil rose in 2020 to 62.6 liters, compared to 59.9 liters per Brazilian in 2019.
Even so, the amount was far from the 2015 level (when the average consumption was 65 liters per year per adult).
The world drank less, but Brazil drank more
And you might be thinking that this increase is a global trend, but it isn't. On a global average, the drink actually saw a drop in sales of around 12%.
To give you an idea, according to Euromonitor, Brazil is the third largest beer consumer market in the world, behind only China and the United States.
However, the United States recorded a 3.4% drop in sales in 2020, in total volume sold. In China, the sales volume was 7% lower than in 2019, according to the survey.
Curious, right? Well, the research found that due to the high level of stress experienced by Brazilians during the coronavirus pandemic, consumption was a way to relieve tension and anxiety during the peak months of Covid-19.
Drink may have been created accidentally
There are several theories about the origin of beer, since around 9 thousand years BC, men began to live in fixed places, ceasing to be nomads, and began to plant cereals to feed themselves.
It was in Mesopotamia, with the Sumerians, around 5 thousand years later, that the first record of the drink appeared. Carved into a stone, it is possible to see an image of a goddess receiving some beer.
The theory of accidental creation, according to historians, is possible since people actually used cereals to feed themselves. Poorly stored and poorly packaged, these grains (such as barley and malt) may have become damp and fermented, arousing people's interest.
Over time, after understanding the fermentation process of these cereals, people developed techniques and different preparation combinations to produce different types of beer.
In Egypt and Ancient Rome, according to historians, people already consumed a beer very similar to the one consumed today: made with water, malt, hops and barley.
It is believed that the drink was named “cerevisia” after the Roman goddess Ceres , who was associated with fertility (especially of agriculture, plants and various grains). The name of this goddess also gave rise to the word “cereals”.
